REVIEW: Character Lessons for Life by Gene Bedley
The core curriculum in too many schools falls short of providing the core ethical virtues that make us who we are. All that is measured and treasured by secular school leaders and curriculum commissions excludes what matters most. The fundamental skills to make confident and ethical decisions is what our children need now more then ever. An educated person must possess more than knowledge and standards that fill our classroom agendas. They must have wisdom, make ethical choices, be courageous, have faith, and focus on others. Character Lessons for Life goes far beyond presenting the philosophical rationale for character building; it takes students through 52 lessons that give life purpose and direction. Gene Bedley has taught and provided leadership in promoting comprehensive character development over the past 40 years. For 20 years he was principal of a public school that is an alternative school with a focus on Value Based Education. The parents who camped out overnight were determined to enroll their kids in his school because of his reputation and the reputation the graduates were receiving as they entered middle and senior high school. For four decades he written a Page a Day for the students in his school where he has worked. He continues to follow their lives in studying the impact of the character development lessons that were developed and are what Character Lessons for Life are all about. ! The findings are significant! While the world continue to define what is broken and does not work, Gene Bedley’s entire writings focus on what works. Gene Bedley has been a teacher, curriculum director, and principal for over 40 years. Gene has been presented the Keeper of the Dream award for his contributions to leadership and developing positive school climate. He was chosen as National Educator of the Year by the PTA. This was for his innovative and creative solutions and strategies for Value Based Education in schools. His numerous awards include the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator award for value-based education, and the International Paul Harris Rotary award for his work as a global leader in character education. His Teen Respect seminars have brought him national acclaim for making a major difference in American high schools.
Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul says: Gene Bedley has not only identified the seven core ethical virtues that empower people to live purposeful lives, he has also given kids everywhere the tools and techniques that contribute the most to making ethical decisions. Our schools and homes will profit from his practical and life changing ideas. Miss America 2001, Angela P. Barraquio, has this to say: Thanks so much for taking the time to assist me with my platform on Character Education.
I would love this site to be added to the curriculum of my son’s school. Is there a way I can send it easily? I would like to share the above to my Facebook friends and family. I believe in all of these values so much and have seen such a sharp decline with the children of today not understanding or practicing integrity , honesty and general ethics. Its hard to bring up child ,( I am a single Mom , ) in a constantly changing environment of internet , tv, violent video games and advertising stimuli that you really can’t control. A diminished value system along with peer pressure is setting the children of tomorrow with a life long disadvantage. Your words of wisdom are crucial to what is needed in school teachings and in homes together as one supportive team to bring up a generation of truly great citizens .
