Rounds, Claims, and the Common Core
The Bedley Bros with Dr. Robert Marzano
One of the single most influential and impactful educators bringing teachers clarity about what they do and how they can do it better is Robert Marzano. My sons Internet program the Bedley Brothers hosted Dr. Marzano on their first Year Anniversary show.
Dr. Marzano cautions educators everywhere as we move into the promising practice of the common core to cautiously make sure that the measurements adopted are not limited to mere multiple choice, lock step assessments but rather find ways to stimulate student learning by encouraging them to make claims and teach them how to provide evidence when their claims are true and when they may not be true.
He also commented on his strategy called Rounds for improving teaching and learning by teachers extending invitations to observe each other in brief teaching /student classroom lessons in classrooms followed by brief follow up meetings to share the observations. He was clear about not using these as peer coaching evaluation experience but rather a process for growing our teaching skills. You’ll want to visit his website. www.marzanoresearch.com for more of his evidenced based strategies for the classroom.

Footnote: Dr Marzano and Darrell Scott of Rachel’s Challenge are currently teaming as co authors of a new book just completed titled Awaken the Learner. Many of the ideas will be presented in workshops this spring in Arizona March 27, 2014 and Indiana April 10, 2014.
