8 Myths of Family Abuse and Violence

in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Secondary Schools / by Gene Bedley
July 1, 1999

Violence at home is a major crisis in our society. It covers a broad range of crimes. From child abuse to spousal beatings, from sexual assaults to murder.

Family abuse can happen to anyone. It knows no economic, geographic,

cultural or gender boundaries. A woman who remains in an abusive home is one of the greatest frustrations that experts in the field of family violence face. Often the reason comes down to either denial or fear. The hardest thing to understand is the depth of fear , All too often those who need assistance the most do not seek it. There are 7 myths when it involves Family violence. We trust these will assist people everywhere that are involved in an abusive environment.

1. Myth: Women are the only victims and men the only abuser

2. Myth: The children don’t know

3. Myth: Victims “ask for” abuse by their actions

4. Myth: Family arguments are just between couples

5. Myth: Arguments are for good reasons

6. Myth: Mothers will protect their children

7. Myth: No matter how bad the relationship is If I stay with the relationship it will get better

8. Myth: If she leaves, it’s over
