1. Include simple rules showing picture of pennies with words “Use

common Sense” If you think you will get hurt or hurt others don’t do it!

“Work it out with kind words” with a lot of examples of kind words

around quote. Role play and practice using kind words. “Never hurt

anyone on the inside or the outside!” “Four Rules for Learning”

2. Utilize the chart 10 ways boys can respect girls by modeling these

words and expecting students to use them (Source the Values in Action!

Guide for teachers.)

3. Get a large Teddy Bear and put a shirt with a pocket on him/her. Name

the bear Responsibility Bear Place several business card size cards in

the bears pocket and write on the card Responsibility Bear is so proud

of you for being Responsible, Kind , Courteous, helpful

( There is a sample card in Gene Bedleys book titled “How do you

recognize a good school when you walk into one”.) Kids are chosen

throughout the day for their responsible acts and get to hug the bear

and take a card to show their parents.

4. Implement a Responsibility program by using a make believe Microphone

called the “Responsibility Microphone” Plan on passing it around after

an activity so children will become accustomed to citing responsible

acts they see on the playground and in the classroom.

5. Print several Business size cards titled the W. B. R. Cards

Below the capital letters have a line where students can write their

name. Plow name line state I did it (W) Without (B)Being (R)Reminded

When kids are responsible throughout the day have them fill in their

name and place the card in a basket for a drawing from time to time to

celebrate responsible students.

6. Native American Talking sticks can be used for passing to students

that have something to share. Students learn you can only talk when the

stick is in their hand. You can also use a Talking Beanie Baby! Toss

to the next person so they can share their Idea. You can only talk when

you have the Bean Bag tossed to you.

7. “Talk it Over Chairs” By placing two chairs side by side you can

invite students who need to solve their problems to visit the chairs and

come up with solutions. Occasionally the teacher will visit one chair

and assist the students or whisper in an ear to give ideas to students

who don’t know what to do!

8. The Bureau of Essential Ethics Education has a six Tape Cassette

Series titled “Character Classics” complete with composers, words for

classics centered around a character Trait. Also includes several

activities in each booklet. It has proven one of the Best Ways to teach
