15 Truths Every Middle School Kid Needs to Know
Maria is the receipient of the Values in Action! Educators National Awards 1998
After working as a Middle School teacher for 10 years, I’ve learned a
lot about what’s important to young adolescents. I’ve learned that if
their boyfriend/girlfriend just dumped them, they couldn’t care less
about what’s going on in my class. Many kids today come to school with
a lot of turmoil in their lives. Whether it be home life, school
activities, peers, or other personal matters. It is important for
educators to try to identify those students that may need that extra
little bit of support. Even the students that are totally stable may
need a little guidance. For this reason, I have written:
“15 Truths Every Middle School Kid Needs to Know.”
(rank in any order you wish)
1. It’s not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life
that counts.
2. Someone “cool” is not always someone that is pretty and popular, but
someone who is nice and cares.
3. Education is a life-long experience…..give it your best!
4. Don’t compare yourself to the best others can do. Worry about what
you can do!
5. You can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for
life. Think before you act!
6. No matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once
in awhile- it is important to forgive.
7. You don’t have to change friends if you understand that friends
change.
8. If you don’t control your attitude- it will control you-get a grip!
9. Respect Authority! You can express your views and opinions without
being rude, condescending, or disrespectful.
10. No matter how bad your heart is broken- the world doesn’t stop for
your grief. You will get over it.
11. Everyone is not doing it! Be strong enough to say NO to drugs, sex,
and alcohol.
12. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
13. Secrets that hurt are secrets to tell! If your friend tells you
something in confidence- don’t betray their trust, unless it is to
protect him/her.
14. You choose your own destiny. If you want to be successful, you
will. Make wise choices!
15. It’s very difficult to determine where to draw the line between
being honest, not hurting people’s feelings, and standing up for what
you believe- follow your heart!
