Laney Students Bring Parents to Schools

in Secondary Schools / by Gene Bedley
July 1, 1999

The S.A.V.E. members of Laney High School in Wilmington have decided to bring their parents to school (isn’t it usually the other way around?). Motivated by a number of incidents that occurred on the campus last year, chapter members Adrienne Moore and Brittany Blake asked principal Maryann Nunnally if it would be possible for parents to help walk the halls of the school to deter fighting and other problems. The parents do not intervene in violent situations; they just report the problem via two-way radios. Ms. Nunnally liked the idea and thus Parents and Partners Against Violence Everywhere (Pave) was formed.Students, teachers, the principal and the parents are all sold on the idea. It continues to make a difference as well as increasing

parental involvement.
