Violence in Schools

in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Secondary Schools / by Gene Bedley
December 1, 1998

The principals of three schools that saw

students die at the hands of other students this last year came

together Friday to offer not solutions, but advice for children,

parents and society. Interviewed on NBC’s “Today” show, the

three warned others that it could happen to anyone and that

metal detectors aren’t the answer.

What do you know about school violence?

‘

Do you think metal detectors should be installed in schools?

Yes, in all middle and high schools

Yes, but only in those with a history of violence

No, by no means should we resort to that

Can’t decide

Vote to see results

NONE HAD a magic solution, but they did offer advice. Like working with

students so that they learn to tell adults about other kids who make threats.

And getting the entire community, not just schools, to look at the problem of

violent children.
