Young Ethics Advocates Declaration

in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Secondary Schools / by Gene Bedley
February 1, 1999

Who We Are: We are young talented thinkers, writers, and speakers focused on

the core ethical values that make each of us a better person.

Our Core Ethical Values: Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Caring,

Fairness, & Citizenships (from Character Counts), and other values we may

adopt, consistent with the core values.

Our Belief: We are entitled to an ethical environment, and each of us is

responsible for it. We can shape that environment if we focus on the core

values we share in common, to address the problems we have in common.

Our Purpose: We will use our individual and collective talents to support

IUSD’s Values Education Program and the national Character Counts campaign to

raise ethics awareness for ourselves and in our own community.

Our Activities: We will learn to understand the meaning and implications of

ethics, to find opportunities to speak, write, or discuss issues with ethical

implications, and to help each other apply ethics with confidence in everyday

conduct. We will share our focus with other students, schools, or communities.

Our Commitment: We pledge to abide by the core ethical values. We do not

claim to be perfect, but we will allow ourselves to be held to an ethical

standard. We know we must try, and we must start, because we will make a difference.

Our Invitation: We invite anyone who shares our commit-ment to join us and

support each other in this effort.
