Guidelines for Teachers
If teachers are going to use the Internet with students, there are a few important connection precautions to keep in mind:
1. Inform parents that their child will be using the Internet. Assure parents that the Internet will be used only under teacher supervision. If parents do not
want their child to use the Internet, honor this request.
2. All use of the Internet must be facilitated by the teacher.
3. The Internet should be used within the curriculum.
4. Students should be supervised at all times when using the Internet.
5. Explain to students, in advance, that they need permission from the teacher to send e-mail or respond to home pages they visit.
Teachers can structure use of the Internet in a number of ways:
1. The teacher must test the sites that students will be using.
2. The teacher can give students choices from which to pick.
3. Students can work from bookmarks (or a web page) that the teacher has organized under a certain topic of study.
4. Students can work from a prepared hot list of curriculum-related sites (i.e., media).
5. Have a class discussion on what to do if students come upon a site that is inappropriate or makes them feel uncomfortable.
