Stayin In School

in Elementary Schools / by Gene Bedley
March 7, 2013

STAYIN’ IN SCHOOL

You can do it if you put your mind to it!

Hey, all you kids! Won’t you listen to me?

I’m gonna talk about life and how it could be.

Stayin’ in school is what I want you to know,

That education is the way to go.

Learn how to read, and learn how to write,

Learn how to add with all your might.

To get good grades, you’ve got to study every day,

To get through school that’s the only way.

YOU CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT,

IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT!

YOU CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT,

IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT!

When you go to class, you gotta sit up straight.

Try to be on time, and don’t be late.

Turn in assignments when they are due,

And for that spelling test tomorrow, don’t forget to review!

Remember, each day, before a test,

You need eight hours sleep to do your best.

Eat a good meal, do your homework, and play,

But not too long, there’s school the next day.

CHORUS

When you’re studyin’ hard, usin’ your brain,

I know sometimes it feels like you’re going insane.

You gotta take good notes to be the best,

Because to get good grades, you gotta pass those tests!

All you students, listen to me,

Stay in school, and get that degree.

Try to be the very best one in your class,

I know it’s hard to be first, but you don’t have to be last.

CHORUS

When the teacher’s tellin’ you what to do,

Listen to the teacher, not the friend beside you.

I know you might think that you’re having a ball,

Until you find yourself kicked out of study hall.

Now when you’re sitting in the classroom, here’s a tip:

Listen real good, and button that lip.

Say you want to go to college, but you’re only doing fair?

Without good grades, you ain’t going nowhere.

CHORUS

In school you learn how to win, and you learn how to lose,

That’s why you have to have the right attitude.

So don’t just sit in class and take up space,

Remember that your mind’s a terrible thing to waste.

When you go to the library, don’t just look,

Do yourself a favor, and check out a book.

Now, if you’re lookin’ around, and you’re starting to guess,

Ask the librarian at the reference desk.

CHORUS

Now, when you’re acting bad, you automatically know,

That’s why you’re heading down to the principal.

So straighten up, and learn how to act,

And get yourself together, start repeating this rap.

You might wake up in the morning feelin’ blue,

And you say to yourself, “Hey, I think I’ll skip school!”

Just change those thoughts, ’cause you know that ain’t right.

Just remember that school is gonna change your life.

CHORUS

Now, for all you young people you think you can make it

In society, you just can’t fake it.

To get through school, don’t try to cheat.

If you play that game, you’ll be walking the street.

Remember, at school, you gotta act right.

Get along with other students, and learn not to fight.

Don’t let anyone tell you that fighting is cool,

Because all that will get you is kicked out of school.

CHORUS

Hey, everybody! This is no lie!

Stay away from drugs, and don’t get high.

Take my advice, and that’s no joke.

Do yourself a favor, stay away from dope.

Now, when you’re walking on your way to school,

You might find older kids trying to influence you.
