Character Education

in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools / by Gene Bedley
March 7, 2013

A separate course or integrated into every discipl

The question of making Character Development an integral part of all disciplines or treated as a separate entity needs to be carefully examined. We have designed activities for both approaches. For example, our activity for studying the “Character’s Character” is an integral part of every piece of literature and decision making. While motives are not easily detected, one can observe the outcomes and impact on others. Ethics in it’s simplest definition = others. Children need to learn that every decision they make impacts their family, faith, and friends, as well as themselves.

On the other hand, we need to invest large amounts of time discussing topics like you’ll find below. All activities are found in my latest released book “Character Lessons for Life”. You can review the chapters and the 52 lessons at our website: www.ethicsusa.com

1-What are the components of an ethical community?

2-Do laws equal ethics?

3-Construct the meaning of respect.

4-Define what a responsible person means.

5-Design a list of rules for a responsible person.

6-Which one of these virtues is paramount to all virtues? Respect, Responsibility, Cooperation, Compassion, Perseverance, Best Result Thinking, Integrity

7-Design a personal code of ethics.

8 -Why is it important to identify your purpose and mission in life and what are the relationships and skills you need to live your life on purpose?

9- What matters most? A review of your checkbook, calendar, and leisure time pursuits.

10- How do you make your choices?

11- What are the most important considerations to include when you design rules for building strong and lasting relationships?

12 Make a list of character traits that friends and family would use to describe you.
