Self Control

in Elementary Schools, Primary Schools / by Gene Bedley
January 5, 2013

When working with children who are out of control you can rely on the following strategies to follow:

You need a plan with specific alternatives in place when the child looses control.

1.Redirect the child. Take child by the hand and walk them to a totally different place in the room.

2. Use an outside signal to signal the class to exit to an outside activity while you assist the child who s lost control.

3. Use the self-control non verbal sign by signing an S and a C to remind the child of a previously made agreement.

4. Cups of self-control. Pour cups of imaginary water overhead and then another cup of water overhead and have it trickle over body to the toes. (Shared by Kathy Walter at Northview Elementary, Olathe, Kansas)
