Patience

in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools / by Gene Bedley

An Act of Respect

I ve recommended over the years that teachers include an act of respect jar in their classroom filled with descriptions/pictures of various acts of respect. At the beginning of each week children are invited to draw one of the acts of respect from the jar and practice the respect act all week long. You might want to include several different acts of respect that help develop patience.

” Listen without interrupting.

” Making the letter W with you hands to show the teacher you are waiting.

” Using various timers to help children wait for their turn and know when their turn is up.

” Invite the entire class to practice waiting for a designated period of time. I use a cyclone tube and put two liter bottles together filled with sand so the kids can actually see time happen.

” Use a clock face card to draw in hands of the clock to show how much time they will have to wait.
