Fact Finding

in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools / by Gene Bedley
March 7, 2013

Steps to resolve problems between two students

One of the most important if not the most important steps in resolving discipline problems between two students with an issue is Fact Finding.

When a discipline problem arises between 2 students include the following fact finding steps

Step 1. Interview and document both students perception and assessment of the problem

Step 2. Interview the witnesses. In the process, do not make any assumptions. Assumptions will only cloud the problem solving process and take away your objectivity which is sorely needed if resolution to the problem occurs

Step 3. Focus exclusively on the facts and avoid hearsay and opinions. If students stories conflict, ask both students for explanations regarding the differences.

Step 4. Invite both students to read and sign your documentation

Step 5. follow through with a course of action which clearly specifys what each party needs to do in the future. Specify a review date when you will meet to follow up on action taken.
