My Sister in Law divorced when her son was 7 and daughter was 12. Their father had visiting rights and was scornful of mom when she would hug them goodbye and say I love you!

So they made a code: Doing things in 3’s.

Three taps on the palm of their hand 1=I, 2=Love, 3= You

They also used 3 pennies, 3 pats on the back, etc.

When she had to spank them it was always 3 swats (I love you even when you are misbehaving.)
