Classroom Management for Difficult Children
Smiling Face/Frowning Face System
Western PA School for the Deaf
Put a smiley face at the top of a 16″ strip of Velcro and a frowning face at the bottom. Attach a photo of the student on each child’s Velcro strip. The photo starts in the middle of the strip each day. An individual goal, along with a photo of the student doing the right behavior, is placed at the top by the smiley face.
After each activity, the photo of the child moves up or down the strip depending on their attention and behavior. If they reach the smiley face, they receive a reward at the end of the day. They also earn privileges, such as a visit to our “token” store or a special trip, for having smiley faces. On a separate chart, they receive a smiley or frowning face for each day. Certificates are given on Friday to each student based on their number of smiley faces that week.
