Letter to Gene

in Primary Schools / by Gene Bedley
March 7, 2013

Dear Gene,

I recently attended your seminar on Discipline and the Difficult child in Appleton WI. I want you to know the seminar inspired me to set up a Solution Center in my classroom as well make C-shirts with the slogan We are the Problem Solvers printed on the front of them. Having numerous difficult children I can now see that every aspect of the classroom either promotes Better choices or natural logical consequences. The willed future definitely makes the biggest impact. We call our program Better Choices as you suggested and have already learned the Better Choices song.

I wanted to Introduce the numerous ideas that I learned from my one day seminar but decided to take it one idea at a time as you suggested! We established an anger management center by using a tree We call it the anger tree. I took several of your ideas an have them pinned or posted on the tree next to my class pledge.

I work on the 10 principles of responsibility management every day and I can t tell you the difference it makes in my responses and the students especially the levels of responsibility chart and the courtesy challenge. It re-emphasizes the need for training students in social skills.

We have started using your Values in Action! Reference points for all discipline problems and am seeing major changes in my students. Many are correcting themselves just by reflecting on the visual and hand signal reminders.

We plan to purchase Values in Action! for our entire school.

Thank you for sharing the Character Classics as well they serve as daily reminders that our character counts We have a long way to go from here but I wanted you to know you were the catalyst and inspiration that really made a difference. Thank you Thank you&.!
