National Values in Action! Awards 2000
The National Character Education Centers National Awards Program is designed to recognize classroom teachers and administrators throughout North America for their exemplary and pioneering work in Ethics Education. The recipients are chosen after reviewing numerous unsolicited nominations.
We are proud to recognize the following 1999 recipients of the National Values in Action! Award.
Our Administrator recipient is Dan Brooks. Dan has provided the leadership in his high school for several years in promoting Character Education when it was not popular. While his student newspaper was not always favorable or supportive Dan continued to promote core ethical virtues and talk about their importance in one’s life. The students have taken major steps in his school in recognizing that morality matters. Congratulations Dan!

One of the superior Role Models in America is Mary Price. A dedicated second grade teacher from Central Arkansas who continually provides a wonderful role model in demonstrating Values to her children. When you meet Mary you never forget her positive attitude and enormous energy. If we offered a curriculum on how to train kids’ hearts, Mary would be the lead teacher. Seldom if ever do kids improve without a role model. Congratulations Mary!

In my recent trip to New England I had the opportunity to meet some wonderful creative teachers. One teacher in particular is Allison Smith from Laurel School in Brewster, Mass. Allison shared some of her creative strategies on how to win children over from her care chair/love chair. Allison believes as I do that when you see a child hurting and needing special attention to invite them into the love chair to be comforted and supported ia a preventive way to head off potential anger acceleration. She also utilizes a strategy by starting a story about animals. i.e. A bunny was alone in the woods and the other animals would not be his friend. Allison invites the children to act out the story and invites them to come up with their own solutions for helping the bunny. Allison reports that children often come up with their own solutions that often represent their own experiences. She considers it a great tool for assisting children with their fears and confusion. Allison is this years recipient of the National Values in Action! Award for pre school teachers! Congratulations Allison!
