Non-Verbal Cues

in Elementary Schools, Primary Schools / by Gene Bedley
March 7, 2013

Look, Lock & Listen- Make an L with your index finger and thumb. Look, Lock, and Listen with your hands moving across your face.

Follow Directions-Show children the index and middle finger walking across the back of the other hand. You can also do a rap song. Follow directions the 1st time given not the 2nd , not the 3rd but the first time given.

Stop- Judo chop across an open palm hand stands for Stop. Hold hand up showing the child your palm means now!

Repeat behavior with a better choice- Circular motion on left shoulder leading hand out from the body.

Angry -Hands on hips and move hands in open position up in front of your face.

Line Up- Judo chop one hand on the other. Little finger on top of index finger.

No Talking -Raise hand high in air and move down face until you get to your mouth. Once hand crosses mouth all talking stops.

Your Responsibility- Index and middle finger crossed making the letter R. Point two fingers toward child meaning it’s your responsibility not mine.

3 Before Me- Show class three fingers and then point them to yourself. Ask them to get help from 3 students in the class before they ask you!

4 Rules for Learning -Show class four fingers. The four fingers refer to the 4 charts on the wall. It’s ok to make mistakes, that’s the way we learn. We learn in our own ways by our own time clock.

Focus 1 – Focus on speaker. Hold 1 finger up and proceed to point to speaker with two fingers pointed toward the eyes.

Open Heart- Open fingers and hold on heart.

Happy Heart- Make smiling face mouth line over heart.

Gotta Have Heart- Beat fist on heart.

Put a Little Love in Your Heart- Thumb and 3 fingers holding invisible love that you place into your heart.

Lead with Empathy- Move the hand in a circular motion over the heart and open toward the audience reveals an open heart.

Time Out -Make a T with your two hands to let the teacher know you need to go to a previously determined place/center in the classroom.

Making Friends- Two index fingers bent like hooks so they can hook each other.

Toilet-Make your hand in shape of a fist with your thumb sticking up between your index finger and your middle finger and twist your wrist.
