Responsibility Clubs for the Classroom

in Elementary Schools, Primary Schools / by Gene Bedley
March 7, 2013

Establish a variety of Responsibility Clubs in your classroom by identifying

students who can contribute help to others. When a child asks for assistance the teacher reminds the children that they can get help from 3 other students before they ask the teacher for help. The rule is Three Before Me! The teacher holds up three fingers to signal you need to get help from 3 other students before you see me. You can have the following Responsibility Clubs with students names listed below the picture of the club on various charts.

Compassion Club This club is for students who are kind and compassionate to those who are hurting. One of the major responsibilities is to be Dr. Care for a day. They have a care bag full tools to comfort children who are hurting. They can also be a friend to someone who needs a friend for a period of time.

Helper Club This club is for kids who know how to do something and can help others in the class learn how to do it as well. They can help kids tie shoe laces or zip various pieces of clothing. They can also help the teacher pass out carpet squares so children can be safe from a child possibly kicking them.

Freddy s Helpers Club This Club is for students who need extra emotional support during school hours. Freddy needs people that will hold him during circle time, tuck him in for his nap time, pass out banana messages he writes to kids or simply wear him on their back.

Music Club This club is for students who can help the teacher keep tract of the songs the class sings. Each song is represented by a picture and placed in a pocket chart rack. Students choose from the variety of songs in the chart rack and after they sing the song the card is turned over. This is done until all the songs are sung and then the pictures are turned back over so children can see all the song cards. Students in this club are also responsible for passing out musical instruments and leading the songs.

Consider creating other responsibility clubs to promote responsibility in your classroom.
