Love Is the Anti-Drug: Truth, honesty, love and communication are the keys to keeping kids drug-free, according to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. Download a brochure for parents on creating an honest, ongoing dialogue in your family.
Beyond the brochure, there are several pages addressing things such as helping your child to cope with peer pressure (with examples of how to extricate yourself gracefully from a situation where you are being pressured to do something that you really DON’T want to do), what to do if your child asks you if you used drugs when you were a teen (with examples of answers that you might give), guidelines for social activities (what parents should be aware of BEFORE sending young people off to an activity), adequate supervision of your children (with emphasis that the hours between 4 and 6 pm are the “danger zone” for drug experimentation and that kids should be under the supervision of an ADULT–not just an older sibling), establishing open and ongoing communication with your child, etc. It emphasizes that kids who are close to their parents are less likely to engage in risky behavior.
