Jars of Feeling
OBJECTIVE:
To teach children how to identify their feelings and talk about them.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
1. Six jars or containers labeled with …
HAPPY EXCITED SAD
ANGRY SORRY SCARED
2. Popsicle sticks with a child s name printed on each.
PROCEDURE:
Each child picks up the popsicle stick with his/her name on it, then puts it into the appropriate jar that expresses their feeling when entering the classroom. In the opening circle time, each child shares why they put their stick in the particular jar and then they can talk about their feeling.
During the school day, they can walk up to the jars and change their stick from one jar to another. They can do this throughout the day as their feelings change.
This exercise really helps students identify how they feel and to express their pent up emotions.
This idea has been used in a kindergarten class and the children love it. They look forward to sharing how they feel.
