Principles of Self Management
* Adult designs the Goal for change or sustaining a behavior with all
primary care givers. The child knows each significant adult in their life
shares common perception and expectation!
* Adult presents the Goal to the child along with the need to develop a Plan
including Agreements, Contingencies,and Reminders.
* Adult communicates that it resides within the student to accomplish the
plan/task. They reinforce this concept with statements like “You can handle
it! ; You are capable!
Even when the child makes wrong choices the adult communicates they’ll master
the behavior.
* Adult recognizes the importance of structuring and keeping an agreements
They know that until a child verbalizes the agreement and signs a written
commitment it’s unlikely the child will follow through.
* Adult knows that most children break their agreements and the importance of
building in contingencies when a plan is developed is as important as the
original agreement.
* Adult recognizes that the child needs reminders more than they need to be
informed. “What signs and symbols are you going to create to help you remember
our agreement?”Adult provides time for students in designing reminders to
assist them with their agreements.
* Adult invites student to verbalize accomplishments and adult affirms success.
